Dr. David Schaepe

Dr. Dave Schaepe, a settler within S’ólh Téméxw since 1993, is Director of the Stó:lō Research and Resource Management Centre at Stó:lō Nation/ Stó:lō Service Agency where has worked since 1997. He also acts as the Chair and General Manager of the S’ólh Téméxw Stewardship Alliance, and is co-lead of the STSA-BC Collaborative Stewardship Forum. He received his Ph.D. in Anthropology/Archaeology from the University of British Columbia and continues to be gratefully schooled by Stó:lō colleagues and knowledge holders. He has published in multiple journals a was a co-editor and contributor to A Stó:lō-Coast Salish Historical Atlas (2001), Man Turned to Stone: T’xwelátse (2012) and more recently editor of Being Ts’elxwéyeqw: First Peoples’ Voices and History from the Chilliwack-Fraser Valley, British Columbia (2018). He led the development of the community-based, award winning Virtual Museum of Canada project Sq’ewlets: A Stó:lō-Coast Salish Community in the Fraser Valley (2017). He currently leads the Xyolhmet ye Syewiqwelh (Taking Care of Our Children) Indian Residential School investigations in the Fraser Valley for the Stó:lō Nation Chiefs Council. He is an Adjunct Professor in UFV’s Departments of Indigenous Studies and Land Use Planning and Environmental Studies; as well as SFU’s Resource and Environmental Management. Dave has been a long-standing member of the provincial Joint Working Group on First Nations Heritage Conservation, as well as a Committee-member on DRIPA Action Plan initiatives on the Heritage Conservation Act Transformation Project, and Repatriation Policy Development. He has two children, a grandchild, and lives in the Chilliwack River Valley on traditional Ts’elxweyeqw Lands.
