Steven Stark (Slə́qsit)

Steven Stark’s story is one of incredible resilience, strength, and leadership that serves as an inspiration to all, particularly Indigenous peoples striving to pave their own paths. Born in Chilliwack, BC, Steven’s early life was marked by adversity – navigating family instability, abuse, and the challenges of undiagnosed dyslexia and deafness. Expelled from school at 15, he faced homelessness, addiction, and incarceration. Despite these setbacks, Steven’s journey is one of transformation, driven by his unwavering determination to rise above.

At 26, after a pivotal family intervention, Steven entered rehab and began the process of rebuilding his life. Through hard work and perseverance, he found a new purpose, first in carpentry and fishing, then in earning his 150GT maritime certificate. This foundation led him to greater success, and in 2011, he founded Tsawwassen Shuttles Inc. (TSI). What began as a modest venture grew into a major employer within the Tsawwassen First Nation community, creating opportunities for local Indigenous people and contributing to economic development. Today, TSI provides a range of services, including transportation, street sweeping, tow trucking, water trucks, and marine logistics, making a significant impact across multiple industries.

Steven’s leadership extends beyond business. As president of the Salish Sea Indigenous Guardians Association (SSIGA), he is deeply committed to Indigenous stewardship, advocating for the preservation and protection of the lands and waters of the region. His dedication to both the environment and his community is a testament to his belief in the power of Indigenous knowledge and leadership to shape the future.

Steven’s motto, “Persistence Overcomes Resistance,” is not just a personal mantra; it’s a guiding principle that he shares with others, showing by example that challenges can be overcome with perseverance, vision, and determination. As a dynamic business leader, Steven is not only leading the way for Indigenous entrepreneurship but is also a beacon of hope and a source of inspiration for others who are determined to break barriers and build a better future.
